The purpose of Transcript-E is to allow for the secure exchange of official student transcripts between postsecondary educational institutions.
 |
Current transcript exchange services require that an EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) file be exchanged via a third party "enabler" in order to submit/receive transcripts to/from other post secondary educational institutions.
Transcript-E will allow a "peer to peer" exchange of official transcripts, thus removing the intermediate step of registering with a third party that handles the EDI file. |
This official transcript exchange via Transcript-E will utilize XML technology using a common standard for the exchange of data. This common standard can be one that has been agreed-upon by the peer schools that regularly exchange transcripts, or it can be a higher education standard such as PESC , which is recognized as the leading authority for data exchange within the higher education community.
The main concern voiced by school administrators and information technology experts is related to security and the ability of Transcript-E to provide a secure environment for the transfer of transcript data. IMS has designed a security standard based on leading industry standards to provide a high-security environment for this data exchange (see white paper). |
